The square root symbol was first used during the 16th Century in Rudolff's Coss. It has been suggested that it originated as an altered form of lowercase r, which represented the Latin "radix" which means "root".

There's a couple different ways to make a square root symbol in an html page. The numeric character reference is the numeric representation of a given character. The numeric character reference uses the following format:

And so, to display the √ symbol with a numeric character reference of 8730, enter:

Character entity reference is the standard name of a given character. To use the character entity reference in your HTML code, use the following format instead:
&Character entity reference;
For example, to display the √ symbol, use the character entity reference of radic:
